Conclusions to the Conference
At the end of the conference the delegates were split into discussion groups to consider the following questions:-

- What are the 3 most pressing needs relating to film and TV archiving?
- What 3 actions should we recommend to the government, the EU and other relevant bodies?
The Answers....
Following the discussion in groups, each group reported back. The outcome of the discussions by the groups was summarsied as follows:-
What conclusions can you draw on the current state of film and TV archiving?
- There is a growing awareness of issues facing AV (audio visual) archives, industry and organisations
- A developing commercial opportunity exists around the digitisation of archives
- There is a commonality of purpose
- There is a lack of clarity about vision and standards
- Not all archives are at the same stage, and there are several different types of archives
- The potential for future development is evident
What are the most pressing needs relating to film and TV archiving?
- Infrastructure
- Resources / people
- Time
- Presentation
- Access and rights, sales and marketing
- Metadata
What actions should we recommend to the government, the EU and other relevant bodies?
- There needs to be development and definition of file delivery standards and agreement about them from relevant parties.
- The responsibilities for audio-visual heritage, nationally and EU-wide, need to be defined.
- The value of AV archives needs to be acknowledged
- The needs to be sustained funding by funding bodies
- Creative ways of funding should be explored e.g. taxbreaks
- Collaboration between interested parties needs to be encouraged
Going Forward
We will be publishing a book on the subject Archiving Tomorrow. Delegates who presented at the conference are invited to prepare a chapter to be included in it. It may be possible to include chapters written by other authors on receipt of a apublication fee. Please contact us for more details.
